Assignment 2: Response to Tutor Feedback

Extremely impressive to have my feedback, especially such detailed notes, only hours after I had submitted the assignment. Pauline’s work ethic and ability to quickly come back with such useful pointers is inspiring and a little humbling.

Positive: 

Overall – really good work

Putting a lot into assignments

Extremely impressive bibliography

Good point about Duchamp’s Fountain being an early example of challenging the nature of the art object.

Some good points on how appropriation attempts to undercut notions of authorship, originality etc.

Visual collages used to compare and contrast sets of images worked well and supported text.

‘New Portraits’ could be interpreted as incorporating the work of others as well as everyday objects.

Less Américains interesting example, good analysis here.

Good feedback for Berger/Benjamin projects.

Negative: 

For hard copy sources give page numbers for references.

Duchamp not DuChamp.

Linked appropriation to postmodern art and culture but could have taken the opportunity to say something more broadly about Postmodernism.

Passage on Sherrie Levine could have been clearer.

Appropriation is a deliberate stratagem to encourage us to think about the whole value system within which the art world operates.

Challenging the nature of the art object.

The status bestowed on any object by the context of the art gallery

[Appropriation art] questions the pervasive idea of the autonomous artist, operating without influence.

Amateurish nature of pictures [for new portraits] can be very interesting and important when attention is drawn to them.

Just about any image can become interesting if presented in a particular way. Scale, paint, tone, saturation create something almost out of nothing.

It is interesting that the notion of trying, or maybe claiming, to challenge the idea of ‘authentic’ artwork, and thus one of great cultural and monetary value, cannot be avoided once an artist is part of the art market system.

Authorship is everything.

‘Counter narratives’ e.g. Personal albums of Nazi soldiers.

Suggestions for further study: 

Gerhard Richter

Use of small, ordinary photographs or a boring advertisement and transferred to a large canvass.

Capitalizes on digital nature of images with a pixelated painting

Sued unsuccessfully for comic book appropriation work

Similar concerns to Muniz, collaboration with hundreds of people moving soil off a mountain in Peru
